Barge Force One: An Adventure of a Lifetime

Hawkesbury, Australia

Looking for an adventure unlike any other? Welcome to Barge Force One, a one-of-a-kind floating community nestled on the beautiful Hawkesbury River in Australia. This ex-military barge has been transformed into a creative, off-grid sanctuary where travelers from all over the world come to connect, learn, and explore. Whether you’re looking to volunteer, discover nature, or meet like-minded adventurers, Barge Force One offers an unforgettable experience.

Meet Sam: The Man Behind the Barge

Sam Prest, the creator of Barge Force One, has spent his life following his passions and embracing creativity. Originally from Adelaide, South Australia, Sam started his journey as a street performer at just 12 years old. This early start taught him how to think outside the box and live independently.

The story of how Sam found the barge is nothing short of magical. In 2010, while performing in York, England, Sam was chatting with a friend about his dream to own a houseboat. A quick online search led them to a 100-ton military barge for sale in Sydney. Even more incredible? The barge was moored in one of Sam’s favorite spots on the Hawkesbury River—a place he had loved for years. Believing it was destiny, Sam bought the barge, using all the money he had to start his dream project.

What Makes Barge Force One So Special?

Barge Force One is not just a place to visit; it’s a full experience. A once-in-a-lifetime experience! The barge is off-grid, powered by solar energy, and equipped with a desalination system for fresh water, and a proper kitchen. Life on the barge is simple but rewarding, giving you a chance to escape the rush of modern life and focus on what truly matters: connecting with nature and people.

Here’s what you can look forward to:

1. Volunteering Opportunities

Travelers who visit Barge Force One don’t just stay—they join the “crew.” As a volunteer, you’ll help maintain the barge and work on creative projects, like building, repairing or improving the facilities. Volunteers typically work from 10 AM to 4 PM (including an hour for lunch), leaving plenty of time for socializing, exploring, or simply relaxing.

Sam looks for volunteers who are proactive and enthusiastic. Whether you’re an artist, a carpenter, or simply someone eager to learn, there’s a role for you here.

2. Adventures and Activities

The barge is perfectly located for outdoor adventures. Here’s what you can do:

  • Rock climbing and bouldering: Explore nearby crags.
  • Swimming: Take a refreshing dip in the river.
  • Trekking: Discover bush trails full of Australian wildlife.
  • Yoga and meditation: Start your day with peace and mindfulness.
  • Evening beach fires: Share stories and enjoy the night sky.

3. Meals and Dining

Meals at Barge Force One are self-catered (meaning you cook from the food provided), but the experience is communal and collaborative. Here’s how meals are typically managed:

  • Shared Preparation: Volunteers come together to prepare meals, fostering teamwork and creating a sense of community.
  • Ingredients: The barge stocks ingredients sourced from supermarket surplus to reduce waste while offering a variety of tasty, healthy foods.
  • Kitchen Facilities: The barge is equipped with a commercial-grade kitchen, making meal prep easy for groups.
  • Special Dietary Needs: If you have specific dietary requirements, let Sam know in advance so plans can be adjusted.

Some evenings, the crew organizes group dinners or beachside feasts, adding a magical touch to the dining experience.

4. A Space for Creativity

Sam is an artist and inventor, and he shares his passion with everyone who visits. His workshop is filled with tools, 3D printers, and scrap materials, offering endless opportunities for creative projects. From sculpting to welding, you’ll have the chance to learn new skills and express yourself.

Life on the Barge

When you first arrive, Sam picks you up in his small boat (nicknamed “the taxi”) to bring you to the barge. As you approach, you’ll see the stunning location that many call a “sacred space.” Onboard, you’ll find a surprisingly spacious setup with seven double beds, a large kitchen, and a communal area where everyone gathers.

Living off-grid comes with its own challenges, but that’s part of the fun. You’ll learn to appreciate solar power, conserve water, and work as a team to keep the barge running smoothly. Every day is an opportunity to learn something new and grow.
